Authority to take possession of abandoned motor vehicles

  • (a) The U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department (V.I.P.D.) may take into custody and deliver to the custody and control of the Department of Property and Procurement any motor vehicle found abandoned on public or private property. In such connection, the U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department (V.I.P.D.) may employ governmental personnel, equipment and facilities or hire persons, equipment and facilities for the purpose of removing, preserving and storing abandoned motor vehicles.

  • (b) Any vehicle not registered and left on the public roadways or public property for seven days or more shall be ticketed, towed and stored. The Virgin Islands Police Department shall treat any vehicle not displaying a valid registration sticker or tag which is left on the public roadways or public property for seven days or more as an abandoned vehicle and shall ticket, tow, preserve, and store the unregistered vehicle and hold the registered owner responsible for all towing, preservation, storage charges and fines, as provided in section 743.
