(a) Notwithstanding any provision of law, the Police Commissioner, subject to the approval of the Governor, is authorized and directed to employ responsible persons as school crossing guards on school days during such times when children are going to and returning home from school.
(b) Instead of or in addition to the employment of school crossing guards pursuant to subsection (a) of this section, the Police Commissioner may employ, subject to the provisions of chapter 25 of Title 3 of this code, persons as regular employees of the U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department (V.I.P.D.) whose work assignment shall include duties as school crossing guards on school days as well as such other duties and responsibilities within the U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department (V.I.P.D.) as the Commissioner shall deem appropriate and in the public interest.
(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, any person employed as a school crossing guard for six months or more shall, at such person's option, be granted classified service status under the provisions of chapter 25, Title 3, Virgin Islands Code, without written competitive examination. The Police Commissioner may assign to employees who elect to be granted classified service under this subsection such other duties as he deems appropriate and in the public interests.
