  • (b) The Board of Medical Examiners is authorized to grant, without examination, a special unrestricted license for a five-year period. A special unrestricted license shall be issued only to a physician who has an unrestricted license to practice in the United States, and who has completed an accredited residency program in his specialty that is approved by the American Medical Association. In addition, the physician must be board-eligible or board-certified in his specialty and must fulfill all of the other requirements for licensure in the Virgin Islands, including the requirements regarding moral character, drug addiction and continuing medical education. As part of the determination to grant the license, the Board shall consider all relevant factors, including the need for the particular specialty in the territory. If a physician who is issued a special unrestricted license under this section is terminated by or resigns from the Government before the five-year license period expires, his license shall be revoked by the Board of Medical Examiners from the date of resignation or termination. If the physician remains with the Government for the five-year license period, the Board of Medical Examiners shall waive the examination requirements of this subchapter and issue a permanent license to the physician. Any physician granted a special unrestricted license under this section shall pay a fee of $500.00.
