Nomination and appointment of Public Defenders

The Public Defender(s) of each division of the Office of the Public Defender shall be appointed by and shall serve at the will of the Public Defender Administration Board created by section 3520 of this chapter. The Board shall name one appointee as Chief Public Defender who shall serve a term of three years and may be reappointed. The Chief Public Defender may be terminated by the Board for cause. The Public Defender(s) for the St. Thomas/St. John division of the Office shall reside in said division. The Public Defender(s) for the St. Croix division of the Office shall reside in that division. Such Public Defender(s) shall be chosen on the basis of their experience and ability in defending persons accused of crime.
