    • Power of Governor

      • (a) The Attorney General, acting on behalf of the Government of the Virgin Islands, consider, ascertain, adjust, determine and settle any claim for money damages of $6,000 or less against the Government of the United States Virgin Islands accruing on or after July 1, 1961, for injury or loss of property or personal injury or death caused by the negligent or wrongful act or omission of an employee of the Government while acting within the scope of his office or employment, under circumstances where the Government of the Virgin Islands, if a private person, would be liable to the claimant in accordance with the law of the place where the act or omission occurred.

    • Presentation of claims; time limit

      • (b) Such claim shall be presented to the Attorney General in writing by the claimant or his agent within six months after the act or omission constituting the basis of the claim. For reasonable cause shown, the Attorney General may extend such time limit. For property damage claims, the claim or notice of intention must be accompanied by two (2) estimates.

    • Finality of award

      • (c) Any such award or settlement shall be final and conclusive on all officers of the Government, except when procured by means of a fraud.

    • Payment by Commissioner of Finance

      • (d) Any such award or settlement shall be paid by the Commissioner of Finance in accordance with vouchers duly certified by the Attorney General.

    • Effect of acceptance

      • (e) The acceptance by the claimant of any such award or settlement shall be final and conclusive on the claimant, and shall constitute a complete release of any claim against the Government of the United States Virgin Islands and against the employee of the Government whose act or omission gave rise to the claim, by reason of the same subject matter.
