  • (a) “Admission” means the formal acceptance by a hospital or other inpatient health care facility of a patient who is placed in an inpatient setting to be provided with a room, medical care, treatment, or observation for at least forty-eight consecutive hours.

  • (b) “Post Discharge Care” means any assistance provided by a caregiver to a patient after the patient’s discharge from a hospital. Such assistance may include, but is not limited to, assisting with basic activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living or carrying out medical/nursing tasks such as: managing wound care, assisting in administering medications, or operating medical equipment.

  • (c) “Caregiver” means any individual a family member, friend neighbor or other individual designated as a caregiver by a patient who provides after-care assistance to the patient living in his or her residence.

  • (d) “Discharge” means a patient’s release or exit against medical advice from a hospital to the patient’s residence following any medical care, treatment, or observation.

  • (e) “Residence” means a dwelling that the patient considers home. The term does not include any rehabilitation facility, hospital, nursing home, assisted living facility, or group home licensed by the Virgin Islands Department of Health.
