There is hereby created in the state treasury the scenic rivers protection fund. The fund shall consist of the donations to the fund received by the department of natural resources and the contributions not to exceed forty dollars that are paid to the registrar of motor vehicles by applicants who voluntarily choose to obtain scenic rivers license plates pursuant to section 4503.56 of the Revised Code.
The contributions deposited in the fund shall be used by the department to help finance wild, scenic, and recreational river areas conservation, education, corridor protection, restoration, and habitat enhancement and clean-up projects along rivers in those areas. The chief of the division of parks and watercraft in the department may expend money in the fund for the acquisition of wild, scenic, and recreational river areas, for the maintenance, protection, and administration of such areas, and for construction of facilities within those areas. All investment earnings of the fund shall be credited to the fund.
As used in this section, "wild river areas," "scenic river areas," and "recreational river areas" have the same meanings as in section 1546.01 of the Revised Code.
