Each municipal judge is entitled to receive compensation as fixed by the charter of the city or, if not fixed by a charter, by the governing body of the city, to be paid by the city. That compensation must not be diminished during the period for which the judge is elected. The compensation may be increased during that period if so provided in the charter of the city.
