Holder relieved from liability upon payment or delivery of abandoned property to treasurer

Upon the payment or delivery of property to the Treasurer, the state assumes custody and responsibility for the safekeeping of the property. A person who pays or delivers property to the Treasurer in good faith is relieved of all liability for any claim then existing or which may arise or be made in respect to the property.
If the holder pays or delivers property to the Treasurer in good faith and thereafter another person claims the property from the holder or another state claims the money or property under its laws relating to escheat or abandoned or unclaimed property, the Treasurer, upon written notice of claim, shall defend the holder against any liability on the claim.
The holder of an interest under Section 89-12-11 shall deliver a duplicate certificate or other evidence of ownership if the holder does not issue certificate of ownership to the administrator.
Any holder who has paid moneys to the Treasurer pursuant to the provisions of this chapter may make payment to any person appearing to such holder to be entitled thereto and, upon proof of such payment and proof that the payee was entitled thereto, the Treasurer shall forthwith reimburse the holder for the payment.
