The executive director shall provide legal services for the defense of claims brought against the state and may in his or her discretion employ legal counsel to coordinate, direct, supervise, or otherwise aid in the investigation of any incident or occurrence likely to result in a claim against the state. The executive director may provide for those legal services through the state attorney general's office or, with the concurrence of the state attorney general, may purchase such legal services from any private law firm or attorney.
